College Life

Learning and personal growth are enhanced through informal interaction with faculty and other students, as well as through formal classroom experiences. Union College offers a number of opportunities which encourage such conversations to take place and for friendships to develop.

Coffee Break: The break for coffee/tea at 11 am each weekday morning in the Dining Room is an important aspect of College life when students and staff can chat together in an informal setting. Coffee and tea are free of charge during the morning coffee break.

Lunch: Cold drinks and snacks are available from the all-day vending machines in the common room. Students who prefer to do so may bring their own food to eat in the College dining room. Students are encouraged to bring friends or members of their family to eat with them in the College.

Worship and Fellowship: There are optional weekly Worship Times each Tuesday and Thursday at 11.20 am in which all students are welcome to participate. Weekly fellowship groups (arranged by students) are an important aspect of the life of the College. A Carol Service is held each year and other seasonal services are also arranged. The College has a clear Christian ethos and a strong sense of community among students and staff.

Mentoring: The care and support of all our students throughout their studies is a top priority for the College. A Lead Mentor - someone who has recently studied Theology at Union, and knows the College well - heads up a team of volunteer mentors: together they provide practical, student-to-student guidance and support to first-year and second-year students for things like study skills or module choices.

Sport and Leisure: Football is normally organised on a Wednesday afternoon. There is a keenly contested pool competition each year. The Student Committee is always looking for new ideas for sport and leisure activities. Fuller details can be obtained from the College Office or any member of the Students' Committee.

There are no classes on a Wednesday afternoon in order to facilitate sporting and recreational activities.
