Early Church History


Year 1




This course traces the main events in Church History from the first to the late fifth century. Topics include; Jewish/Gentile conflict, persecution (causes and consequences), early heresies (including Gnosticism, Montanism and Arianism) the development of the New Testament canon, belief and practice (including Baptism, Eucharist, Penance), Church/State relations, Monasticism, an introduction to primary sources. The lives of several individuals will also be examined (for example: Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Clement, Tertullian, Cyprian, Ambrose, Augustine, Patrick).


  • Assignment, 2,000 words (40%)
  • Article review, 1,500 words (30%)

LECTURE DAYS & TIMES: L1 Mon 9am; L2 Tues 10am.

TUTORIAL DAYS AND TIMES: T1 Tues 2pm; T2 Tues 3pm; T3 Wed 9am; T4 Wed 10am.
