This history fieldtrip module focuses upon the First World War.

The Fieldtrip

This consists of three elements related to a consideration of factors relating to faith and the First World War. Students will individually research a selected topic, participate in a fieldtrip to First World War sites in Belgium and France and produce a reflective journal on their fieldtrip experience.

All topics are explored by personally guided research.

Queen's Online

Reading material and resources will be available to students.

Efficient student/tutor email queries will also be maintained.

Assignments will be electronically submitted and marked.


Module Assessment consists of two elements:

1)  a 4,000-word assignment

2)  a 2,000-word reflective journal

Assignment options:

The 4,000 word assignment will be on one of the following topics;

  1. Discuss Augustine’s theory of a Just War with reference to the First World War.
  2. With reference to at least three individuals, examine the message of the war poets.
  3. Explore the troublesome Irish connections to the First World War and remembrance of it.
  4. Assess the response of the main churches to the First World War.

The assignment is completed and marked before the fieldtrip.


Assignments will be marked and returned electronically via Queen's Online.


2016 prices = £325 (sharing) or £425 (single room) includes flights, hotel, minibus, lunches and museums.
