A series of six Thursday evenings are being held in Union Theological College commencing on Thursday 17 October at 7.30pm. Under the title of “Theology for All” there will be two talks each evening.
Dr Zach Cole, Lecturer in Biblical Studies, will be addressing the topic of the Reliability of the Bible on each of the six evenings. Dr Cole says, “Although the Bible is routinely dismissed as fanciful and corrupted beyond hope of recovery, there is in fact a vast amount of evidence supporting its authenticity. The reliability of both the Old and New Testaments can be demonstrated by investigating their archaeology, textual transmission, and historical accuracy, among other things. I hope to draw attention to just some of the reasons why Christians can be confident that the Bible they read is trustworthy.”
The second part of the lecture series will be on the theme “What is the Bible and how can it help us?” and will be led by Professor Michael McClenahan and Dr Martyn Cowan.
The introductory talk will consider the act of reading and listening (as creatures) in the context of God’s being - Who is God that he would speak to us? In other words, it will begin with God and our lives in relation to his life. This will be followed by four talks on what have been described as the “attributes” of Scripture. These characteristics of Scripture help us to understand what the Bible is and they enable us to grasp how the written word works in the community of God’s people to transform us into the likeness of Christ. The final talk in this part of the programme will be on approaching Scripture with due humility. Jesus Christ is the true man. How does his walk of faith enable us to understand the relationship between God’s Word and God’s plan for our flourishing.
The evenings are open to everyone.
The cost for all six evenings is £50 or £10 per evening. To find out more, call 028 9020 5080.
