For the past decade, Steve Bryan (PhD, Cambridge University) has served as Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. From 1992-2015, he taught in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the Evangelical Theological College and at the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology, where he also served as Dean of Studies. He is the author of The Visible Word of the Unseen God: Reading John Among Rivals Old and New (Baylor University Press, 2025), Cultural Identity and the Purposes of God: A Biblical Theology of Ethnicity, Nationality, and Race (Crossway, 2022), and Jesus and Israel’s Traditions of Judgment and Restoration (Cambridge University Press, 2002). He has written articles for The Journal of Theological Studies, Journal of Biblical Literature, Bulletin of Biblical Research, and Tyndale Bulletin. He is currently working on the John volume for the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series and on the John section for the second edition of Baker’s Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament.
Dr. Bryan serves as part of the Theology Working Group of Lausanne and contributed to the drafting of the Seoul Statement. He serves as an elder at Trinity Community Church in Libertyville, IL. He and his wife, Dawn, remain active in ministry within international settings as Associate Members of SIM.
