Lecturer in New Testament

Dr James Beevers

BA, MA, MDiv, PhD

I came to UTC in the summer of 2026. As Lecturer in New Testament, I teach Greek and New Testament across the undergraduate and graduate levels.

I was born in Switzerland, and grew up in Germany. I began my study of theology in Bonn, where I earned a B.A. in Theology, and started my graduate studies toward an M.A. After a transfer, I completed my M.Div. and Ph.D. at Westminster Theological Seminary between 2019 and 2026. My doctoral research was carried out in the context of a Richard B. Gaffin Jr. postgraduate research award.

During our time in Philadelphia, I taught Greek and Greek exegesis in the residential MDiv, as well as New Testament (Hebrews to Revelation) in the Online MDiv and MAR programs. I was also blessed to serve as a pastor at Grace City Church in Northeast Philadelphia.

My research interests include the book of Hebrews (I wrote my dissertation on faith in Hebrews) as well as the broader topic of “faith” and soteriology in Paul and other New Testament documents. A significant secondary interest is the Johannine corpus. As for current projects, I am helping to edit and contribute to a reference volume on the New Testament use of the Old (Crossway), and finishing commentaries on Revelation and 1 John (Lexham Press, LRC). Two co-authored shorter commentaries in the same series on 2 John and 3 John are completed and forthcoming. I am also in the process of making requested edits to my doctoral thesis for publication, and continuing to write articles related to my primary expertise in Hebrews, including forthcoming articles in NTS (Cambridge) and UCC (V&R).
