Dean of Ministerial Studies and Development

Rev Gordon Best

I joined Faculty as Dean of Ministerial Studies and Development in September 2025, following a 29 year ministry in Newmills Presbyterian Church, Co. Down. Previously, I served as Assistant Minister in Greenwell Street congregation, Newtownards.

My simple philosophy of ministry has been, 'lead with a servant heart.' I have accumulated considerable pastoral experience, having journeyed with many individuals and families through the highs and lows of their everyday lives. I believe strongly that the key role of the preacher is to communicate God’s Word in a way that resonates with people, who are facing all kinds of challenges in their home and working lives, and helps them to live out biblical truth as authentic followers of Jesus.

As the new DMSD, I count it a privilege to play a part in teaching, mentoring and shaping the future ministers of our Church. I’m looking forward to sharing some of my own ministry experiences with students, licentiates and others in the early years of ministry, and also learning from their wisdom.

There's no doubt that 21st century ministry in a fast-changing Presbyterian Church in Ireland and in a highly confused world is already challenging, and the challenges are likely to increase. However, we have a great God and a great message of hope to share. I am convinced that as we hold to the truth of HIs Word, and make Christ in all His beauty known, God will build His Church within our denomination and exceed our expectations.

I have travelled to Asia on several occasions - much of which truly fascinates me! Over the past 16 years, I have had the joy of travelling regularly to Myanmar to do some teaching in a small church planting training college

I am married to Pamela and we have two adult children, Katie and Stuart.

When I’m not in ‘work mode’, I dabble in a some light exercise at one of my local gyms. I enjoy fair-weather cycling and bracing walks around the North Coast (and also Lurgan Park!). I love eating out and drinking copious amounts of good coffee. I'm strangely interested in genealogy and researching my family history.
