Introducing Rev Gordon Best: Dean of Ministerial Studies and Development

Share:

Can you tell us about your ministry so far in the PCI?

I was ordained whilst still an assistant, in Greenwell Street congregation, Newtownards, in January 1994. I was then installed as minister of Newmills (Iveagh) congregation in April 1996, where I have remained ever since. A lot of my ministry has centred around managing the many changes that have occurred in the congregation over the years, such as numerical growth, worshipping in a new meeting house, and establishing new ministries.

-How do you feel your ministry has prepared you for this new role?

My simple philosophy of ministry is 'lead with a servant heart: serve God whilst serving others.' I have accumulated considerable pastoral experience as I have journeyed with many individuals and families through the highs and lows of their everyday lives - often learning from my mistakes! I trust this has enabled me to communicate God's Word in a way that resonates with them, and helps them to live out biblical truth as followers of Jesus. I really look forward to sharing some of these experiences with students, licentiates and others in the early years of ministry.

- What are you most excited about as you take on this role at UTC?

I'm excited to meet the ministry students and others in training, get to know them, hear their stories so far, journey with them, learn from them, share some of my own experiences, and inspire them with Gospel-filled confidence as they prepare to 'go out and make disciples.' I count it an absolute privilege to step into this role, to help teach, mentor and shape some of the future ministers of our Church.

-What are your hopes for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland?

There's no doubt that 21st century ministry in a fast-changing Presbyterian Church in Ireland and in a highly confused world is already challenging, and the challenges are likely to increase. However, we have a great God and a great message of hope to share. I am convinced that as we hold to the truth of HIs Word, and make Christ in all His beauty known, God will build His Church within our denomination, and exceed our expectations. He's not done with us yet! Exciting days lie ahead!

-How do you spend your time outside of your ministry?

I dabble in some light exercise at one of my local gyms. I enjoy fair-weather cycling and bracing walks around the North Coast (or even in Lurgan Park!). I love eating out, and drinking copious amounts of good coffee. I'm strangely interested in genealogy and researching my family history. I have travelled to Asia on several occasions - much of which truly fascinates me!
