Book review: Scribes & Scripture

Dr Robbie Booth

Share:

There are many misconceptions regarding how we got our Bible today and whether we can trust the words it contains. In 'Scribes & Scripture: The Amazing Story of How We Got the Bible', John D. Meade and Peter J. Gurry provide a helpful introduction to the history of the Bible, seeking to answer questions such as, How did we get our Bible? Can we trust what it says? Why are there so many translations?

The book is divided into three sections. The first section describes the process of how the Old and New Testaments were first written, copied, and transmitted by scribes. The second section addresses how the books we consider holy Scripture ended up in our Bibles. The third section provides an overview of the history of Bible translation from the early Jews and Christians, through the Reformation, to the present day. This section also includes a discussion of why there are so many English translations available today. Finally, the book concludes with an examination of some of the theological issues that arise out of the nine chapters of the book.

Being firmly committed to the divine inspiration and authority of Scripture, Meade and Gurry have written Scribes & Scripture for the purpose of encouraging and strengthening Christians in their love for and trust in the Bible. I highly recommend this accessible book to anyone who is interested in or been asked questions about the origins of our Bible and its trustworthiness.
