Student testimonial: Joanna MacFarland, MA Theology

Share:

Joanna recently graduated from the MA in Theology online programme, delivered through our partners at BibleMesh. Below are her reflections on her studies:

"I commenced the MA in Theology part-time in January 2021 and graduated in Summer 2023 and I would highly recommend it. After four years in full-time mission work I moved into full-time church ministry, and it was after my first year in ministry that the suggestion I might be suited to further theological studies was put to me. Some prayer, thought and wise counsel led me to Union Theological College, and when I made contact the UTC staff were extremely helpful and after conversations with a couple of staff the MA seemed a sensible option.

I completed the MA part-time while working full-time in church ministry. Anyone who works in ministry knows how unpredictable some days can be, so having online studies made it possible to watch lectures and engage in the online forums around ministry life. It was a challenge to balance studies and ministry so if you are considering this while working, you need to be self-disciplined and stick to the module plan following the recommended reading, lectures and study sets. Throughout the module, the BibleMesh tutors are available for guidance, along with regular class calls with visiting speakers on the module topic. Online learning can be difficult if you cannot get access to the books required. The online Gamble Library is a vast resource, and the UTC library staff are superb. They are speedy with their responses to any queries and ensure you have what you need.

Each of the modules is set at a level which will stretch you academically and the content will enrich your heart. Right from the first module I was able to apply what I was learning in daily ministry. Whether in pastoral situations, small group Bible studies or training others, the MA has been incredibly helpful. If you work in ministry it will benefit you greatly and I wholeheartedly recommend it."
